人是人的關系造就而成，這是孔子哲學一個根本思想。一直以啟迪精神的人群同處，這樣度過生命的諸多年華，我感到自己有很大福分。想起上世紀六十年代，十八歲的我踏上香港的土地；機會就那樣開始：我在這個稱作"大中華"的，一些最有聲望的學府，先是做學生，然后做起先生：開始是香港和臺灣，后來則是全中國各地的許多大學。
A fundamental precept in Confucian philosophy is that we are constituted by our relationships. And it has been my good fortune to have lived these many years in the company of an inspiring community.Since my arrival in Hong Kong in the mid-sixties at 18 years old, I have had the opportunity to first study and then later to teach at some of the most prestigious institutions in Greater China-first in Hong Kong and Taiwan, and then later in many universities around China.
在中國大學謀面的教授與學生，構成我學術的家庭。人之造就而成，實為"合多而一"，天事人事皆為"一多不分"；這是從儒家哲學我獲得的兩個深刻啟示 - 接受孔子文化獎的殊榮，我要代表的就是這個學術家庭，我是作為它的延續(xù)。我自己，將把孔子文化獎視作激勵與動力源泉的無窮無盡，持久流淌。將竭盡全力做這個家庭代表，不辜負這份厚重的榮譽。
And the faculty and students at these institutions have become my professional family. Tothe extent that a personcan be properly described as "many who have become one," and to the extent that"the one and the many are inseparable"-two precepts I draw from Confucian philosophy-I accept this honor with deep gratitude on behalf of this extended community of people.For me personally, the Confucius Culture Award willbe a continuing source of encouragement and aspiration as I try to represent this family and to live up to such an honor.
我們處在重要轉折時代。確實令人刮目，中國僅用一代人時間，便奇跡般崛起；我們正目睹，世界經濟、政治秩序在發(fā)生重大轉變。世界文化秩序也會變嗎？中國文化是不是也將改變世界？
We are living at a critical,transitional time. Indeed, with themiraculous ascentof China over the space of a single generation, we have witnessed the transformation of the economic and political order of the world. But what about the cultural world order? Will Chinese culture make a difference?
數十年間，中國國內，幾乎每所重要大學校園，都悄然出現國學院。在國際，400多孔子學院已遍布世界各地；僅在美國，就多達90余所。今天的世界需要儒家的傳統(tǒng)智慧和價值；注重家庭、和諧、道德，是作為人、社會、國家關系不可缺少的生長條件，它有利于建設世界的新興文化秩序。
Over the past several decades domestically we have seen the emergence of Institutes of Canonical Learning on every major university campus in China, and internationally we have seen the establishment of some 400 Confucius Institutes around the world-some 90 of them in the United States alone. Today the world needs the wisdom and values of this Confucian traditionwith its focus on family, on harmony, on morality as the growth in personal, communal, and international relations, to help shape this newly emerging cultural order.
儒家思想固然是一種古老文化，根基深刻、穩(wěn)固，但也同時是生氣勃勃、充滿活力的傳統(tǒng)。她召喚我們：投身、貢獻！人能弘道，非道弘人。
